por aca, a bar notoriously known for hosting a universidad-age crowd

parque san martin, aka my new training facility!

so i've tried to upload more pictures but it takes forever! this is the third time i have tried to write this post...third time's a charm?? anyways, not much has happened this week. "shopping period" began at universidad de congreso, the private, smaller university (one building!) in mendoza. i'm not taking any classes there, so i have til monday, when the "shopping period" starts at the universidad nacional de cuyo (un cuyo). basically it has just been a week of relaxed mornings, runs in el parque san martín, and afternoons spent at cafés with my friends. i think i'm starting to get the hang of things...most importantly, the micro (or bus) system! it's quite an accomplishment. this week, our ifsa spanish classes started. it's pretty boring. the first day i told my class that i lived in a state with more cows than people. for my oral presentation, i talked about the strawberry "festival" in middletown springs. needless to say, i think my profesora thinks i am a little strange. but it's good. boring this week, but on monday, we have a class on mate, the official drink of argentina. mate is ground up yerba leaves and then steeped like tea leaves in a special mate container. i will post pictures when we do it in class!! this weekend has been crazy to say the least. last night and early this morning, a bunch of us went out to a bar and then walked 15 blocks to plaza de independencia to catch a traffico (a large van) to go to the boliches (nightclubs) that are located 20 minutes outside of the city. we arrived early (2am), and stayed til 5am. it was fun, but by 4, i was ready to leave...it's exhausting! i ended up not getting home til around 6:30 after getting back into mendoza, waiting for the bus, etc. THEN this morning at 7:49, i woke up to go hiking in the andes. crazy? rode the struggle bus to the center of the city where i met up with my friend and we stumbled over to the bus terminal. we took a bus an hour or so outside the city to potrerillos. it is absolutely gorgeous, we were just at the base of the argentinian side of the andes. really incredible. sadly, my camera died before i could even take one picture. i almost cried. but i stole pics off my friend's facebook for this blog. it was breathtaking. the pictures don't do the area justice, it's so vast with the snow-capped andes in the distance, the desert-like shrubbery surrounding the river, the mountains that don't have snow, the caribbean-blue lake, and the small, isolated town just pocketed in this absolutely beautiful place.
